The shortcut key helps to provide an easy and fast way to navigate and execute commands in the computer software. The shortcut key is usually accessed using the Shift key in combination with the Alt key (on the IBM compatible computer), the command key (on the Apple computer), the Ctrl key or any other key. For example, in the image file on the right, there is an underline on "F", which means that you can press the Alt key and then press the "F" key to access the file menu.

In some programs, the user has to press and hold Alt to see the underlined characters. In the image above, you can see that some common features like Open (Ctrl + O) and Save (Ctrl + S) have shortcut keys. Basic PC Shortcut Key
Below is a list of some of the most commonly used basic shortcut keys that work with IBM compatible computer and software. It is highly recommended that all users refer to these shortcut keys or try to remember them. Doing so will dramatically increase your productivity.

Tip: In addition to the special character shortcuts listed here, some numbers are also located on the keys (under F1 - F12 keys). You can enter these special characters by pressing the Shift key and the number key on which the special characters are listed.

  • Alt+F → File menu options in the current program.
  • Alt+E → Edit options in the current program.
  • Alt+Tab → Switch between open programs.
  • F1 → View help information (F1 is used by almost every Windows program to display help).

  • Ctrl+N → Create a new or blank document in some software or open a new tab in most Internet browsers.

  • Ctrl+Left arrow → Moves one word to the left at a time.
  • Ctrl+Right arrow → Moves one word to the right at a time.
  • Ctrl+Esc → Opens the Start menu.
  • Ctrl+Shift+Esc → Opens the Windows Task Manager.
  • Alt+F4 → Close the currently active program.
  • Alt+Enter → Open the properties for the selected item (file, folder, shortcut, etc.).
